WhatsApp Just Hired A New Exec To Help It Make Money

popular messaging app has not significantly changed its business model to make money. But now comes a substantial step towards chasing profits: WhatsApp has hired Matthew Idema, a senior executive in marketing and advertising from Facebook, to be its first chief operating officer, a spokesperson for WhatsApp told  FORBES . The hiring was first reported by  Recode , which said that while Idema’s role was still being “ironed out” his new job would see him focus on helping WhatsApp monetize itself. WhatsApp announced his appointment internally on Tuesday afternoon. Like WhatsApp’s co-founders Idema spent a large chunk of his earlier career in Silicon Valley at Yahoo. Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg brokered his  blockbuster takeover deal  with WhatsApp in February 2014 on the premise that the company would remain independent, and that he wouldn’t put pressure on its founders Jan Koum and Brian Acton to monetize. This, despite the fact that Zuckerberg bought Instagram for far less ($1 b

Saraki says the President Buhari he met in London was witty and healthy

The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has assured Nigerians that President Buhari is healthy, and there was no cause for alarm after he visited Buhari who is on an extended medical vacation in the United Kingdom yesterday. The president I saw today is healthy, witty and himself. The president’s absence and imminent return shows that there is no vacuum in government and our system of democracy is working with all organs of government fulfilling their mandate.  And let me use the time tested cliché, there is no cause for alarm!” Deputy Speaker, Hon. Yusuf Lasun and Majority Leader in the House, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, who were supposed to have been on the trip, could not make it. THISDAY reports that the visit was at the instance of Buhari who was said to have called Saraki and asked him to come over to London. This creepy Facebook tool is revealing a LOT about you [updated]

if we knew how much data we willingly handed out each day, would it matter? If ignorance truly is bliss, as they say, we’re a society of happy internet users that are blissed out of our goddamn minds. A new tool called  Stalkscan  gives users a peek at just how sweet ignorance can be. Created by self-proclaimed ethical hacker, Inti De Ceukelaire, Stalkscan taps the power of a mostly-forgotten Facebook feature to offer up shocking insight into anyone that hasn’t completely locked down their Facebook profile (or Page). In 2013 Facebook launched a powerful new feature called Graph Search. The robust new search engine allowed users open access to many data sources Facebook had previously kept to itself. From the simple, like finding photos of your neighbor when she was 21; to the creepy, such as stalking single friends’ comments, events they’ve attended, statuses they’ve liked, and even seeing which bars they visit most often; all things were possible through Graph Search. BlackBerry accuses Nokia of patent infringement

The Blackberry Mercury 7628 Sarah Tew/CNET BlackBerry is crying foul against Nokia, alleging in  a new lawsuit  that its mobile networking products are infringing on as many as eleven of BlackBerry's patents without being properly licensed. The infringement case lands in the US District Court for the District of Delaware, in Wilmington, and comes as both the Blackberry and Nokia names work to mount comebacks, complete with  rumors of new phones  aimed at ginning up nostalgia sales in 2017. BlackBerry claims that its patented networking tech is essential to a mobile communications standard called 3GPP, and isn't seeking to block its use. Instead, the Canada-based brand licenses its technology out to competitors, and seeks damages from Nokia for failing to comply. Nokia, a company best known for making Nokia phones (before  licensing them to HMD Global ), focuses on networking equipment, health (through its acquisition of Withings) and products like the  360-degree Ozo

Do New Galaxy S8 Leaks Reveal Too Many Secrets?

Thanks to the incendiary Note 7 battery issues, Samsung delayed the production schedule of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus to ensure that the correct lessons were learned from the burning phablet. That has pushed the launch date further back into 2017 - but nobody seems to have told the leakers. The volume of information coming out threatens to overwhelm the Galaxy S8's media strategy with too much information  arriving too early in its personal hype cycle. Visitors experience Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge devices during the Korea Electronics Grand Fair (Photo: Jung Yeon-Je/AFP/Getty Images) Of course the pace and content of these leaks would be just about fine if the Galaxy S8 portfolio was going to be revealed at this month's Mobile World Congress. While no manufacturer wants to have a device spoiled and leaked, the modern marketing schedule is built around the reality of the information industry. With twelve days to go until MWC  the appearance of full renders and
