Google turns Search into an app launcher (and it’s a pretty big deal)

Google  is probably the first place you go to when you want information, be it the weather, a translation, or some current event you heads about. But think of those precious few seconds you spend actually  typing  what you want to learn – such a waste. Now Google is making your life even easier by rejigging it’s mobile app and website to work with  tappable shortcuts , complementing the search box and automated information cards. That essentially turns the Google app into an launcher of sorts, wherein all of Google’s web tools – from suggesting restaurants to flipping a coin – are mini-apps. There are a ton of these shortcuts – which are divided into categories like entertainment or travel – that include the usual search inquiries as well as some oddballs. Some examples: Weather Translate Do a barrel roll News TV Shows Tic Tac Toe Animal Sounds Restaurant suggestions Nearby ATMs Solitaire Flip a coin Emails Book a hotel Sunset time These aren’t new f

For Twitter's 11th birthday, they just gifted the world with Periscope Producer API

Live video on Twitter's about to get a bit more professional.  On the occasion of its 11th birthday,  Twitter just announced  the ability for broadcasters to use professional cameras and editing software to stream live video directly to the platform.  Eleven years ago, Twitter was limited to 140 characters—no hashtags, no blue checkmarks for verified accounts, no retweets or likes (a.k.a. favorites). Just Tweets. Nothing else.  Cofounders Jack Dorsey and Biz Stone launched the site with these 20 characters each: But over the last few years, Twitter has transformed into a site offering images, video, and most recently, live video. To say nothing of all the change its basic text product has spurned throughout the world, for better or worse.   That said:  Video is the future . Or so says Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. And while Dorsey (two-time, part-time CEO)  touts the word "live" more than video , he's shown that they're on the same quest:

The Snapchat-styled WhatsApp St

7 apps that are quietly killing your data plan

Stop these popular apps from running up monthly data charges. Curtailing your phone use as you near your data cap at the end of each month is no way to live. A better way is to stop data-hungry apps from using too much data in the first place. The apps that use the most data typically are the apps that you use the most. For a lot of people, that's  Facebook ,  Instagram ,  Netflix ,  Snapchat ,  Spotify ,  Twitter  and  YouTube . If you use any of these apps daily, change these settings to reduce how much data they use. On an  iPhone , you can check how much data each of your apps use by going to  Settings > Cellular . For each the apps on the alphabetical list, you'll see a small number listed below its title that shows how much data it has used. Scroll to the bottom to see when it started counting this data usage, which is likely either when you first activated your iPhone or installed the app in question. At the bottom of the list, you can tap the  Reset Sta

How to keep Facebook quizzes from spamming your friends

If you're addicted to Facebook quizzes but hate how they bug everyone in your feed, check out this tip. Photo by Screenshot by Alina Bradford/CNET Facebook quizzes are so seductive. Of course you want to know who you were in a past life and what your decorating style is. The only problem with these quizzes is that they often send spammy messages to everyone you know by posting things on your page at random. Nothing makes friends unfollow faster than feed spam. You can stop the spam and keep your quizzes by making sure to click appropriately. As soon as you click on a quiz, most of them will ask you, "Who can see updates from this app?" Always click  Only Me . Even though you pick this option, you can still take the quiz and you can still post the results, if you like. When the quiz does post spam on your feed, though, only you will be able to see the post, and your friends won't be bothered. Did you already do a quiz and it won't stop spamming? Go
